Upland is a city of roughly 80,000 people in San Bernardino County, sitting at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains with Mount Baldy visible on the northern horizon from almost anywhere in the city. It is known locally as the "City of Gracious Living" - a nickname that fits, given the tree-lined streets, mature neighborhoods, and homeownership rates well above the county average. A large share of the housing stock was built between the 1950s and 1980s, which means many homes are 40 to 70 years old and their masonry reflects it.

The most recognizable street in Upland is Euclid Avenue, a wide, tree-lined boulevard that runs north to south through the heart of the city. The older neighborhoods near downtown and the historic Upland Train Depot on A Street have some of the city's oldest homes, many of which have original brick chimneys and masonry planters that have never been serviced. Newer subdivisions on the north side of the city, closer to Mount Baldy, were built mostly from the 1980s through 2000s and are now old enough to need their first round of masonry attention.
